The film: The fourth century AD. Egypt is under Roman rule. The Christians are rebelling in Alexandria. Helped by her disciples, the brilliant astronomer Hypatia attempts to conserve the knowledge gathered over the centuries and has taken refuge in the great library, now threatened by the angry rebels. Two of her disciples are in love with her-Orestes and the young slave Davus, torn between his feelings and the prospect of being freed if he agrees to join the increasingly powerful Christians.
