Marty Does George: Scorsese To Present Documentary on George Harrison

 George HarrisonGeorge Harrison

Tuesday, November 20---------Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese will direct a documentary film on the life of George Harrison, the youngest member of the Beatles, who died of lung cancer in 2001 at the age of 58. This is Scorsese's last excursion into music-based documentary and concert films, which memorably includes THE LAST WALTZ (1979), about the final concert of The Band, NO DIRECTION HOME (2005), about troubadour Bob Dylan, and the upcoming SHINE A LIGHT, a film portrait of Rolling Stones.

Scorsese will examine the personal and professional career of George Harrison, from his early Britpop days as one of the "fab four" to his successful solo career, as well as his ventures as a movie producer with Handmade Films (MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN, TIME BANDITS). The film will also delve into Harrison's celebrated journey into Eastern spirituality and its influence on his musical career, personal life and commitment as a humanitarian (he produced the famed CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH in the 1970s) . Mr. Harrison's widow, Olivia Harrison, will be a contributing producer, and the surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, are expected to participate. Though interviews and production are to begin this year, the film will not be ready for at least 2 years, as Scorsese is mounting several new features following his Oscar win for last year's THE DEPARTED. The docu will be edited by David Tedeschi, who also edited the Rolling Stones film and the Bob Dylan television special.
