Coming to an end with today's screening of the closing film A Serious Man (by the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen), the Viennale can once again boast a successful outcome.
With a total of 94,800 Viennale-goers, the 2009 festival has again scored a considerable increase in the number of visitors.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that the field of Documentary Short Subject contenders for the 82nd Academy Awards® has been narrowed to eight films, of which three to five will earn Oscar® nominations.
Voters from the Academy's Documentary Branch viewed this year's 37 eligible entries and submitted their ballots to PricewaterhouseCoopers for tabulation.

European Film Academy announces documentary nominees - The European Film Academy proudly announces the nominations in the category EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY DOCUMENTARY 2009 – PRIX ARTE. There is a total of ten documentary films nominated. Upon invitation by the city of Vilnius, this year’s documentary jury will now convene in the Lithuanian capital to screen the nominated films and decide on the winner.
Appointed by the European Film Academy and ARTE, the members of the documentary jury are:

Presided over by actress Debra Winger, the jury of the International Feature Film Competition awarded its Golden Eye to the Russian drama Wolfy by Vasilij Sigarev. In this competition category curated by Nikolaj Nikitin, the jury chose the film for "its haunting and single-minded vision, extraordinary lead performance and imaginative use of cinematic language".
Although the Toronto International Film Festival does not have a official Competition Section (which distinguishes it from events in Cannes, Berlin, Venice and San Sebastian), there are a few awards announcements to close out the 12 day event.
The 10th International Bitfilm Festival for Digital Film will reach its climax on October 1st when the award ceremony will take place at the Cinematheque Tel Aviv.

DAS WEISSE BAND (The White Ribbon) directed by Michael HANEKE
The Palme d'Or for the Best Short Film was awarded to Arena by João Salaviza. A Special Mention went to The Six Dollar Fifty Man by Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland.
The Camera d'Or for Best Debut Feature was awarded to Warwick Thornton for "Samson and Delilah". A Special Mention went to Ajami by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, presented in the Directors' Fortnight.
Un Certain Regard 2009 presented 20 films from 24 directors hailing from 20 different countries. 2 of the works were first films.

The student film Baba by Zuzana Špidlová has won the Cinéfondation grand prize- The student film Baba /2008/ by screenwriter and director Zuzana Špidlová has won the Cinéfondation grand prize - the Prix de la Cinéfondation - at this year's International Film Festival in Cannes, which closes on May 24, 2009. The movie, which was made as an undergraduate exercise at the Film and TV Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU), was selected to represent the Czech Republic in the prestigious festival's official program, in the educational section Cinéfondation.
Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel's LA PIVELLINA, an Austrian/Italian co-production, has been awarded the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European Film in the Directors' Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival, it was announced today by a jury of four Europa Cinemas exhibitors - the seventh year the Label has been awarded in the section.
LA PIVELLINA will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas exhibitors who commit themselves to extend the length of its run on screen and additional promotion across the network.

We won the best award any festival has to offer--the Audience Award. At 8:30 PM last night, me and my producer Lauren Versel and my editor David Leonard mounted a small stage at a Union Square boite upon hearing that "City Island"--the movie that many of you dear readers have investested much of the last year in reading about and following the progress of--was the winner of the coveted Heineken Audience Award. Out of the eighty-five movies that Tribeca selected to show this year, we were chosen by the public as the favorite.
