Greetings from Melbourne
A cultured city with beautiful, elegant Victorian architecture, Melbourne's Christmas season is dampened by rain and wet, even in summer. The "garden state", Victoria, boasts world heritage houses and gardens which feature in the films, "Foundations Of The Heart" a story which originated from a novella, written by the director, and "The Pink Lady", an original script, also by the director, based on legend researched from Australia's past.

"Foundations Of The Heart"
As in the images of the old classic paintings, a gypsy tribe trespasses the boundaries of a small farm, and a young girl's adolescent passions and dreams are brought to life when she encounters a captivating visitor on her veranda.

Foundations Of The Heart
read a passage from a “Foundations of The Heart” extract, the novella from which the screenplay was adapted;
A densely knitted blackness surrounded them after the sun had completely disappeared from the sky. The gypsies moved around her, carrying drums, pipes and tobacco. One of the uncles sat and began to lightly strum on his mandolin, the music trickled over her ears and consciousness beautifully, and relaxed, she stood up and began walking back to the caravan, the sweet smell of barbecued meat, in the open atmosphere, following her. She stopped and looked outwards at the white bark trees which were spread around her. She walked past the van, and rested against one of the trees which lined the outskirts of their modest encampment. These were pre dynastic trunks of silver eucalypti, outlined by navy sky.

O Cinema, A Princesa e o Mar (The Cinema, The Princess and the Sea)
A treat for the senses; this sweet bossa nova drips with romance, and seduces me into dreams of flying to the film festival in Tahiti! Deep throated Brazilian diva Angela Ro Ro sings with a lusty yearning for the cinema, 'the Princess and the Sea'
I've fallen in love with the luscious melody and the portuguese lyrics- liberally something along the lines of;
"I lose my problems, I feel great - I'm from Ipanema beach - if I'm homesick, I go to the cinema, I go to see 'The Princess and The Sea'.. but if I find a new love, then the film has the flavour of wet kisses, in the darkness we can live a little time alone... I go with a passion... I lose my problems, I feel great... If I need to, every day of the week, I return to my love of the cinema"

Celluloid dreams
I woke up this afternoon (yes, like a true writer I’d been burning the midnight oil) to the alarming sound of the phone ringing. Hollywood calling? Perhaps I should get up. Nah… Spielberg? He can leave a message. Celluloid dreams had imprisoned me. I’d gone to the pool and met this very handsome young swimmer. Or so I thought–
Ah the classic cinematic twist! Like those compulsory page turners on page 21, my dreams have more twists and turns than an episode of Road Runner on fast forward. The swimmer was about to dive into the pool with Olympic finesse – until he noticed me and turned to chat. Turned out he was a rock star, funny that, and we really hit it off...

Welcome from Wendy
Welcome to summer in Sydney. Yes, its hot and sultry down here. Filmmakers are sweating over their keyboards, wishing they were in the cooler climates of New York New York, dreaming of beating their chests at the top of the Empire State Building like King Kong.. but yes, I post my blog to prove to the world that there is a Film Industry outside of the US of A.
So.. what do you know of Australian films? I recall one of my first trips to a film festival in the States, where the first film-maker I met greeted me with a gushing comment I will never forget; "Oh I just LOVE films from Australia. ESPECIALLY ones from New Zealand".
