Once a child laborer who trekked from Mexico to the fields of California to pick strawberries, Jose Hernandez recently traveled into space as an astronaut on the Discovery space shuttle. His story honors both the desperate struggle of immigrants and the greatness of which they are capable. This film and spoken word performance are a tribute.
Director: Ben Ferris.
“There are Two Gates of Disembodied Dreams: The Gate of Horn and the Gate of Ivory. Those dreams that reach us through carved ivory bring words that damage us…But dreams that take the Gate of Polished Horn…do foretell what is in truth to come.” [Penelope, Book 19 ‘The Odyssey’ of Homer]
Penelope, the mythical character from Homer’s The Odyssey, is waiting for her husband Odysseus to return from war.
In this film adaptation, set in a mythic time and space, with contemporary influences and attitudes, Penelope is both archetype and human being. She wanders alone through the halls of her castle, each room a different memory. In these rooms she has visions of her husband, as past, present and future become indistinguishable from each other.
Her visions are an escape from the loneliness of the present and increasingly dislocate her from the world around her: the companionship of her maidservants and the feasting mythical suitors who have gathered in her halls.
A film festival to celebrate the joining of art, science and technology in the spirit of Leonardo da Vinci. Held each year in Corvallis, Oregon (USA), the festival accepts films in feature, short, documentary, and young filmmaker categories. The festival also awards the 'Spirit of da Vinci' prize to the film that best captures the relationship between art and technology. The festival began in 2000 and has continued to grow each year.
Corvallis, Oregon is the home of Oregon State University, ranked among the top engineering and science schools in the United States. Corvallis is also the location of a major research and development facility for Hewlett-Packard. The audiences of the da Vinci festival appreciate great independent film and the filmmakers who contribute to the art. Visit us at http://www.davincifilmfest.org
The Toronto International Film Festival's new home, the much-touted Bell Lightbox, with its swish, state-of-the-art theatre complex (and towering, pricey condo development), may not be open in time for this year's festival, but it's playing a central role in helping to signal a subtle shift in the TIFF sensibilities. On the side of the as-yet incomplete building, a towering projection of short, intense works by artists Marco Brambilla, Oliver Pietsch and Jeremy Shaw will loop every night, in, as ...
