Braunschweig International filmfest
Founded in 1986, Braunschweig International filmfest is the oldest festival in Lower Saxony, Northern Germany.
Started by a handful of cinema enthousiasts it has developed into an audience festival for 22,000 visitors.
Around 280 film industry professionals – filmmakers, actors, producers, composers, press – attend the festival to see about 170 full-length and short films on six screens.
Programme
Young European cinema of the highest standard is one of the trademarks of the Braunschweig International filmfest.
“Music & Film” is Braunschweig’s second focal point, drawing attention of the sound of the moving images.
International premières, cinéma d’auteurs, fi lm concerts, retrospectives, ributes and four awards round off the fi lmfest’s profi le, giving the audience and the press ample scope for new discoveries.
Music & Film
Braunschweig International filmfest devotes itself to a long neglected aspect of cinema history and culture: the close relationship between film and music. Since 2002
we have invited famous film composers to present a selection of their films and talk about their work in a music master class.
In cooperation with Braunschweig State Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras of the world, the filmfest also howcases silent film concerts with new compositions.
THE AWARDS
European Actors Award »THE EUROPA«
With the European Actors Award »THE EUROPA« Braunschweig International filmfest honors an actress or actor for his or her outstanding artistic performances and contribution to European fi lm culture. In addition to the prize money of 10.000 Euros donated by main sponsor Volkswagen Financial Services, a bronze statue called EUROPA, will be awarded.
The Competitions
»THE HEINRICH« Audience award for European
debut & second features, first awarded in 1999. The prize money of 10,000 Euros is equally divided between the director and the distributor or producer to support distribution in Germany.
»THE LEO« Short film music award
First awarded in 2003, for the best combination of image and sound in a short fi lm. Based on jury decision, the prize of 2,000 Euros will be rewarded equally to the
director and the composer.
»KINEMA« French-German youth award for debut films
Since 2007 a jury of fi ve young French and German adults have selected the winner who receives a 35mm print of his or her fi lm with French/German subtitles. The award highlights the film cultural exchange between Lower Saxony and the French region Haute-Normandie that filmfest started in 2001.
