A few good books on festivals

DEKALOG 3: ON FILM FESTIVALS Richard Porton (ed.) In an increasingly ‘event-driven' cultural environment, film festivals are now regarded as indispensable. Yet are festivals such as Cannes, Sundance and Toronto being sabotaged by their own success? Do they truly serve the needs of cinephiles, as well as the larger public? These are among the questions explored in essays, memoirs and impassioned polemics by a distinguished array of critics and programmers. This timely anthology begins w...

MoMA Tribute To Strand Releasing

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Film New York Editor Being an independent distributor of European films in the American market is more a labour of love than it is a ticket to monied success. Among the most hard-working and celebrated of these arthouse distribution companies is Los Angeles-based Strand Releasing, which is receiving a 20th anniversary tribute next week at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. MoMA is presenting a six-film showcase of recent titles fro...

Boycott The Film Festivals Mandarines

#
Attention scoop: festivals aren't profitable. They're intended to help leverage the buzz of a film in order to get distribution. The festival circuit is unique as it sheds light on an amazing wealth of productions worldwide. The concept is terrific.  However, often the concept is not understood properly. Festival means festive celebration. Festivals celebrate the 7th art. My mission is I accept it is not to sabotage a film or a festival but to report about the films, ambiance and what...

The Wacky And The Weird At SILVERDOCS

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Festival Dailies Editor The SILVERDOCS International Film Festival, which is entering its final weekend, is by most accounts a very sober affair. After all, many of the films are about challenging subjects of human rights abuse, political exploitation, ecological ruin and the inhumanity of men and their regimes. But the programmers of the event have made sure to season this sober brew with some films whose premises are a bit "out there". However, i...

Documentaries At The Crossroads

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Festival Dailies Editor As SILVERDOCS, the nation's most prominent documentary film festival, begins to hit its stride, it is worth mentioning that the documentary film has not had the charmed life at the box office as we saw earlier in the decade. While not every film can hope to reach the stratosphere of FAHRENHEIT 911 (which had a record-shattering $120 million international box office gross in 2004), the recent crop of documentaries coming to theaters ...

Open Air Cinema City

user
First open air film festival in Serbia, Cinema City has been closed Sunday in ovation of the mainly young audience, with ceremony awards and at the end and a big drunken haze party in evening. No doubt that organizer, Exit did pretty much to cheer and entertain Novi Sad. Taking the fact that this pretty large and beautiful Serbian City has no cinema, the festival organized first open air cinema in Serbia. The festival fulfilled total capacity with total sale of tickets, with all open air sits...

The Challenge Of Human Rights

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Film New York Editor These challenging times call for courage, determination and a selflessness that was woefully out of fashion in the Me-Me-Me Decade that preceded the worldwide economic collapse. That there is potential for the global community to learn from its mistakes is always a hopeful sign (although let us remember that the Great Depression was followed almost immediately by its antidote, World War II). When this moral courage needs to be inspired i...

Serbia’s Cinema City

Imagine the picturesque little town with an interesting architecture mixture on Balkan and imagine the place full of pretty women. Now you imagine the festivity town and beautiful weather, and how actually looks the place where Exit Festival happens (the most famous music festival on Balkan). The place is called Novi Sad and it is settled in a little country called Serbia. Well, this festivity is called the Cinema City http://eng.cinemacity.org/what-is-cinema-city.31.html and is pretty new i...
